A tie can elevate your entire outfit to a new level. A muted suit suddenly takes on a lot of personality with a colorful, patterned tie. A business shirt looks more formal with the addition of a solid, dark tie.
But choosing the right tie in the right color is one thing – tying it is quite another! If you're also unsure about the fine art of tying a tie, here are instructions for four different tie knots that you can easily tie yourself.
Four popular tie knots
Four-in-Hand
The four-in-hand tie knot is one of the simplest knots and is therefore ideal if you're new to tying ties. Because it's relatively easy to master, it's also one of the more common knots and can be worn both casually and for more formal occasions. Learn how to tie the four-in-hand tie knot in our video tutorial or by watching the illustration:
Windsor-Knot
This knot requires a little more practice than the Four-in-Hand Knot, as the steps for a Windsor Knot are a bit more complicated. The knot has a fairly triangular shape and fills the neck a bit more. Therefore, it works best with slightly narrower ties, perhaps paired with a shirt with a cutaway collar.
Kent-Knot
The Kent knot requires a few more steps to tie, so wait until you've had some practice. However, it's not one of the most difficult knots, so feel free to give it a try if you've mastered the four-in-hand knot and are ready for a new challenge. A Kent knot is well-suited for wide or thick ties because it's not as large and therefore doesn't look too overwhelming, even with large ties.
Big Windsor-Knot
This knot is perhaps the most symmetrical of the four, and once you've become an expert at tying a tie, you can truly achieve a perfect knot by tying a Grand Windsor Knot. Another thing to keep in mind with this knot is that it's quite bulky, so it works well with shirts that offer plenty of room in the collar—preferably a cutaway collar.
