Lukas Hoffmann inspires us with his curiosity about literature, art, photography, and sense of aesthetics.

We visited him in Berlin, where we went for a stroll in his neighborhood Prenzlauer Berg and hung out in his apartment. Here, we were greeted by lush plants, intriguing vintage finds, colourful homemade paintings, and books on photographic art.

We talked with him about his life as an entrepreneur behind the book app Bookie, which is created with the idea of making reading more social. He expressed his enthusiasm for living in Berlin, where there is room for all kinds of personalities, and then he talked about his passion for creating - both through creating art and exploring photography with his analog camera around his neck.

Read our interview with him and discover his favourite pieces from our Essentials Collection.

What is your name, occupation, and where do you live?

I'm Lucas, and I have lived in Berlin for the last couple of years.

My occupation is partly divided into being a content creator and then also I founded my own little startup around one and a half years ago.

What’s great about living in Berlin?

Yeah, good question, I do like the fact that the city kind of makes me feel like everything is okay and you can do so many different things, and all kinds of personalities are accepted.

I think even though I'm not the kind of person that goes crazy in terms of trying everything out it gives a nice touch to living here and makes me feel quite comfortable and welcome.

I still feel the need to go out and see a bit of nature and get relaxation through that, I think is also quite important to me.

Is it important for you to escape busy city life sometimes?

I think it's important to me, but I also think it's sometimes quite difficult because you're so sucked into your life by all the things you do and your daily rhythm, but I think I can find a lot of calmness in my daily life as well.

I still feel the need to go out and see a bit of nature and get relaxation through that, I think is also quite important to me. Sometimes I feel as if I'm not doing it enough and I think I can always do it more.

Have you always been expressing yourself with art and photography? What does it do for you?

With photography, it has been something I've been doing for ten years maybe, but I had a lot of times, where it was more and less and I'm still trying to figure out a way that it is easily incorporated into what I'm doing.

Besides that, currently I'm in a mode where I do less photography, but I switched a bit into painting and I've discovered that for me during the COVID times.

I think a lot of people have just wandered into like an art store and bought some paint and some canvas and tried themselves out and I really liked it. It's playing a role in my life that I don't want to miss.

Will the Bookie app change the way we read?

I think that's the idea, right? Like, I started it based on the fact that I always felt like reading is something so isolated and it misses the parts of human interaction, you could say.

I was wondering how you can make it a bit more social and also the question you always hear people saying, “Oh, I want to read more, I want to read more” and how can you actually help them? And can the social part of it play a role in terms of motivating people to read more? Also, the question like "How do you think about books before and after you read them?"

This is something that helps people to better understand and discuss books in a way that they haven't been done before and finding the right people to discuss them with.

This was like the basic idea for Bookie. Since then, we just started working on it and it's still not clear where where it's going.

A lot of things are changing right now in the app. We haven’t opened it internationally yet, because right now it's focused on German books, but we're just trying to change that and then hopefully soon, everybody from anywhere can download the app and find partners to read and discuss their books with.

So that's basically it. How can we make or how can we create a more social reading experience?

Like book clubs, for example, but also the idea that we can help you connect to the right people, because I think the interesting thing is that if you have two people reading the same book, you know for sure there's something they can talk about.

The idea of using that to bring these two people together or create more than like a group is something I find exciting.

One of the ideas of Bookie is that you can just enter anybody's bookshelf and see what they're reading, and what they wrote about it. That's also something you can do with me, as soon as we open up, you can just go to my page and you can see all my favourite books and what I like about them.

What’s essential in your wardrobe and fits your lifestyle?

My style is very easygoing and very natural in a way and my favourite items are just basic nice sweaters or like warm coats during the winter.

This is something I think I like wearing the most, to be honest. I don't want to make a big statement and I like clothes to be calm, understated and comfortable with a bit of functionality too. I try to show my personality a bit through it, and I think for me it's just the calmness and the easiness of things.

When I buy clothes, it's always like with the idea of how it can fit like into my closet for a long time. That's something I consider when I think about clothes and clothing in general.

How would you describe Lindbergh?

For me it was nice, because I think that what I just described I like about clothes, it kind of connects to the brand. I like when I find garments that I can really easily see how it would fit in with my other clothes. So, I enjoy that it has this easiness to it and this ability to generalize the clothes and just see it in very different kind of parts of your life.

I think that it brings a lot of aspects together and it represents the ideas I have about clothes. So that's why I also like this collaboration and working with it.

I don't have a lot of events where I have to dress up, except like the basics, like wedding here and there. I always really like dressing up, even though I don't do it a lot. But then sometimes if I’m going to these kinds of events or premieres, it's always fun and that makes it a bit special as well.

What are you passionate about right now?

Generally, I just like to find these things where you're passionate about. Right now it's the book, it's the app and it's building this team around it and like putting this idea into people's head and trying to to get them on board.

Just combining these two things, having something that you personally really like and then kind of bringing more people into this vision I think that's something I just really like doing right now.

Besides that, I have this exploration of art, even though I wouldn't personally consider myself an artist, but I just like to expressing myself through art.

Sometimes people would say, okay that's maybe art or not, but it doesn't really matter, because it’s just the act of expressing yourself and then being able to, to get other people excited about it.
