Interview

Hi, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Jakob Juul and I am an artist residing in Århus where I live. I have my atelier in Brabrand, where I paint and spend my everyday work life.

What motivated and inspired you to start your career in art?

I have always had an interest in art and have followed great Danish artists, but I never dared to jump into it myself, until one day I went down to “Søstrene Grene” and bought a canvas and some paint. Suddenly I had been standing in my underwear painting in my small apartment for over five hours without thinking about it. From that day I fell in love with painting and creating art.

Have you always thought you were going to be an artist?

I never ever thought I would be working with art, I always thought I would be an entrepreneur and loved numbers. I started as an economics student and have always worked with it, but things shifted in my life where I suddenly became super interested in painting and one day passed after another and now I'm sitting here in my large atelier and making a living painting.

What characterizes you as an artist?

What characterizes me as an artist, in my view, is that I have a raw expression in my paintings. It’s not something I've always had, but I am captivated by this raw expression now.

I like to challenge the human mind to look at something for a long while, analyze it and maybe be a bit provoked by the fact that they don’t understand what it is.

That’s also why I love shapes and figures and different colour compositions and that there is a lot happening. This is something I have fought hard to bring out in my paintings, but I feel like I finally got where I can get people to stop and feel provoked in some way. I also care a lot about that it’s aesthetically pleasing and modern

You have made art your livelihood - What was it like to make that decision?

When I had to make the decision to make art my livelihood, it was very anxiety inducing.

I have always been used to getting a fixed salary and having a safe environment in a workplace, which stands in a stark contrast to suddenly being solo in a small company, that I am not certain can survive, but I am really happy about it, and I love getting up in the morning and do what I'm doing today.

It matters to me that I feel like I look good, even when I paint, it gives me freedom, and sometimes I feel that I can bring that to the canvas.

How would you describe your clothing style?

I would describe my clothing style as a bit casual and minimalistic. I often choose muted and colder colors. At my previous workplace, I was used to showing up in more formal clothes, wearing a shirt every day. I have brought this into my work as an artist, because I love wearing a nice shirt with some good pockets. I also love wearing more casual, loose pants that has room for movement. It matters to me that I feel like I look good, even when I paint, it gives me freedom, and sometimes I feel that I can bring that to the canvas. That's why I put a lot of effort into wearing nice and aesthetic clothes, because that's also what I focus on in my paintings.
